Caritas stands by those in needwhether in Aleppo or Zurich

Caritas Switzerland continues to grow: in 2024, the organisation employs more staff than ever before – in Switzerland and abroad, across a wide range of sectors and roles. One reason for this is a new mandate in the field of asylum.

Project employee Bakhtiyor Ashurov is a regular visitor to the Rasht Valley and supports the farmers with his extensive knowledge. The agricultural engineer has been involved in the project since the beginning and knows the challenges of farming in the region inside out. © Reto Albertalli

Interview

Political commitment is needed to fight poverty

In the Federal Parliament or at the UN: Caritas Switzerland is actively involved in politics. With success? Andreas Lustenberger, Head of Research and Policy, gives his opinion.

Political commitment

Poverty reduction and climate policy are inextricably linked

At last: the Federal Council wants to introduce a national poverty strategy. At the same time, it is making savings for the poorest people in the world. We assess and classify.

Climate policy is poverty policy and thus a core concern of Caritas. The climate crisis is creating new realities – and the world’s poorest in particular lack the means to adapt to them.

For years, Caritas Switzerland has been calling for a national poverty strategy. In 2024, a majority in favour of this was finally reached in Bern: Parliament has commissioned the Federal Council to develop one – a success for all those who can barely make ends meet in Switzerland. The national platform against poverty will also be continued.

Switzerland: Fight against poverty

Poverty Remains High

More and more people in Switzerland are struggling due to rising housing and healthcare costs. Families with children are especially affected.

Facts

  • One in four single parents in Switzerland does not have enough money to live on.
  • Poverty also affects children in Switzerland – 3 children in every school class whose parents can barely afford the basic necessities.
