The humanitarian crisis in Syria has reached critical levels, with 16.7 million people in need of assistance in 2024, the highest since the conflict began in 2011. This prolonged crisis has resulted in 7.2 million internally displaced persons (IDPs) and over 6.5 million Syrian refugees globally.

Economic collapse, characterized by hyperinflation and a severe devaluation of the Syrian pound, has compounded the challenges faced by vulnerable households. Nearly 80% of the population lives in poverty, struggling to access essential services like food, healthcare, and shelter.

Recent events, including ongoing armed conflict in several locations, have exacerbated displacement and vulnerability. Since late November 2024, 1.1 million people have been displaced from Aleppo, Idleb, Hama, and Homs due to escalating clashes. Additionally, more than 5,000 IDPs from north-west Syria have begun returning to their homes, despite the challenges posed by limited resources and infrastructure.

Caritas Switzerland is providing emergency support to vulnerable households in Syria to address their urgent needs due to conflict or displacement.

Caritas Switzerland is mobilizing emergency support to address the urgent needs of households in Syria. The intervention is designed to provide essential financial support, allowing affected communities to meet urgent needs such as food, shelter, healthcare, and other basic services. By distributing cash assistance, the project aims to provide flexibility and choice to recipients, enabling them to prioritize their most critical needs during this crisis.

Recognizing that in times of emergency, access to cash can significantly enhance the coping capacity of households, restoring dignity and empowering individuals to make decisions based on their unique needs. In collaboration with its local partners, CACH will ensure that the distribution of cash assistance is prioritizing the most vulnerable groups, including those who have been severely impacted by conflict or displacement.
