Annual accounts for 2017

Excellent donation result

In 2017, Caritas Switzerland implemented programmes and projects amounting to 106.7 million Swiss francs. At the same time, it recorded an outstanding donation income of 34.3 million Swiss francs. In addition, Swiss Solidarity, the Federal government and various international supra-national institutions as well as private foundations supported the Caritas projects in Switzerland and abroad with substantial contributions.

Expenditure in the 2017 financial year totalled 106.7 million Swiss francs. This included 48.1 million Swiss francs spent on projects and programmes of international cooperation. A significant commitment, alongside the projects focusing on long-term food security, water supply and dealing with climate change, were the humanitarian programmes in support of the Syrians displaced by the war in Jordan, Lebanon and Syria. Two other key areas of international activities were emergency aid and survival assistance for the victims of the drought in the Horn of Africa and the aid programmes in the Caribbean (Haiti and Cuba) after Hurricane ‘Irma’. Swiss Solidarity, SDC and private foundations co-financed these aid measures.

In Switzerland, Caritas Switzerland supported social projects, among others, at a total amount of 39.5 million Swiss francs. The main focus was on aid to the Grisons community of Bondo, which was struck by a rock fall. Other activities included – in cooperation with the Regional Caritas Organisations – social and debt counselling as well as the involvement in the Caritas Markets, where people experiencing poverty can buy basic essentials at greatly reduced prices.  Thanks to important partnerships, it was also possible to further develop the Caritas Culture Pass. Its aim is to enable poor families to access cultural events and leisure activities. The focus on these activities reflects the commitment of the Caritas Declaration ‘on the fight against poverty in wealthy Switzerland’. It states Caritas’ commitment to do everything to ensure that the number of poor people in Switzerland is halved by the year 2020.

9.4 per cent of expenditure for administration and publicity

On the revenue side, direct donations amounting to 34.3 million Swiss francs were recorded – an excellent result which was only exceeded in the Tsunami year of 2005 (35 million). Private contributions from third parties – from Swiss Solidarity and other Caritas organisations – totalled 20.2 million Swiss francs. Added to this was own operating income of 10.9 million Swiss francs, as well as public-sector contributions of 42.9 million Swiss francs for development cooperation (SDC) and for service mandates in the asylum and refugee sector. This resulted in a total income of 108.4 million Swiss francs.

Caritas' general expenditure on administration and publicity in the past year was 9.4 per cent. This means that 90.6 per cent of donations and contributions went directly to the projects and programmes.
