Earthquake in Colombia

More than 160 people lost their lives and many others were injured in a severe earthquake in western Colombia on Monday. Caritas Switzerland is coordinating with its local partner organizations to determine how it can support those affected.

An earthquake measuring 7.4 on the Richter scale struck several regions in western Colombia on Monday morning (local time), with the epicenter located in the department of Chocó. No definitive information is yet available on the exact extent of the damage.

Authorities currently estimate that at least 160 people have died. Many people are still missing. Thousands of families have lost their homes; according to preliminary reports, at least 1,800 buildings have been damaged, including residential buildings, health and educational facilities, and airports.

According to local Caritas organizations, there is a great need on the ground for emergency shelter, drinking water, medical care, and psychosocial support. Partners are already coordinating initial relief efforts in the disaster area.

Caritas Switzerland has been active in the region for years. We are currently working with our partners to determine how we can best support those affected by the earthquake.
