Earthquake and tsunami in Indonesia

Caritas emergency relief in Indonesia: Water, hygiene and childcare

Caritas Switzerland is supporting the victims of the earthquake that struck the Indonesian island of Sulawesi at the end of September, by providing extensive emergency relief. A project co-funded by Swiss Solidarity amounting to CHF 450,000 is designed to help 2,000 families in villages in the vicinity of the destroyed city of Palu.

In the rural districts of Sigi and Donggala, unlike in the city of Palu itself, hardly any emergency supplies have yet arrived, after the devastating earthquake and the tsunami of 28 September which claimed more than 2,000 lives and destroyed 68,000 houses. ‘When carrying out investigations in a remote village, we found that even three weeks after the disaster, no relief items were being distributed. There is only one single water tank and no sanitary facilities for 180 families’, reported Puspa Kartika, Caritas Switzerland’s emergency relief coordinator. The 2,000 families who will be the recipients of Caritas’ assistance have lost their homes and all their possessions. They are living in temporary settlements in tents. Caritas Switzerland, in cooperation with Caritas Austria and the local aid organisation Indonesia Bhadra Utama (IBU), is distributing essential emergency relief items such as blankets, tarpaulins, towels, soap and hygiene kits. Thanks to the distribution of water filters, people have access to drinking water. Hygiene training sessions help to protect against disease. Children can participate in leisure activities and recover from the trauma of the disaster.

Caritas Switzerland will expand its emergency aid for the earthquake victims in the coming weeks. For this purpose, the local coordinator and a humanitarian aid expert from Switzerland are active on the ground. In the medium term, Caritas will assist those affected with rebuilding their livelihoods.
