More than 11 million people from Syria have been forced to flee their homes, approximately half of them children. Since 2012, Caritas Switzerland has provided emergency relief and long-term support totalling 18 million Swiss francs in Jordan, Syria, Lebanon and northern Iraq.
People on very low incomes can buy food items and toiletries at greatly reduced prices. Thanks to these savings, they have greater financial flexibility.
In the 24 Caritas markets located throughout Switzerland, people suffering financial hardship can, against presentation of an entitlement card, get food items and everyday necessities at greatly reduced prices. Savings compared to retail shops can amount to up to 50 per cent. The product range includes basic food items, fresh food products, hygiene articles and all major items for everyday use.
Depending on the Canton, the entitlement card can be obtained from social security offices, church social welfare services, charitable associations and Caritas itself.
