A world without hunger
Challenge
800 million people worldwide are undernourished. Three quarters of those affected by undernourishment are children. Every day, thousands of children die from the consequences of hunger and malnutrition. The causes of this tragedy, which means unspeakable suffering for every single human being, are poverty, mismanagement, climate change, natural disasters or war.
Hunger can be eliminated. In long-term projects, we train small farmers in Africa and worldwide so they can get better yields from their land and thus fight hunger. In a catastrophe and during famines, we provide the victims with food
Caritas aid
With the theme sponsorship of ‘A world without hunger’, a variety of projects receive support:
- Furthering of Chadian farmers regarding more efficient production and conservation of natural resources
- Training of small famers in Haiti in the use of modern cultivation methods under the changed climatic conditions, and of resistant seeds
- Support for small farmers in Kosovo in the production and marketing of honey, berries and herbs
- Combating malnutrition among children in Southern Sudan by teaching mothers in the planting of vegetable gardens
With one Swiss franc per day, you make a practical contribution that enables Caritas to help families and whole villages to secure their food supplies and to build a sustainable livelihood by their own efforts. Become a theme sponsor and stop worldwide hunger.
Support in Chad: Successes in agriculture
«I live with my husband and our two children in southern Chad. We are small farmers and grow groundnuts and cotton. However, it is becoming increasingly difficult to live off our land. The yields are declining, and prices are falling. Caritas has trained us in appropriate cultivation methods, maintains a storage facility for the groundnuts and developed a cooperative with a farmers’ bank. Thanks to Caritas’ aid, we are now even able to save, invest in the farming and pay for our children’s education.»
