Hunger in East Africa
East Africa is affected by a catastrophic drought. Millions of people are suffering from a severe shortage of food and drinking water. There has been no rain in large parts of East Africa for more than two years. The situation is becoming ever more calamitous. People are in urgent need of emergency aid.
Caritas provides emergency relief, with the focus on South Sudan, Somaliland, Ethiopia and Kenya. Depending on the needs in these countries, we help with food, clean drinking water, animal feed and veterinary medicine. In addition, undernourished children are provided with medical care.
60-year-old Tibles did not own land in the past. She and her husband earned their living as cattle farmers. During drought periods, they had to change their location every day to stop the animals from starving to death. Which happened often. Today, thanks to Caritas, Tibles grows fruit, vegetables and grass for animal feed on her terraces. She produces so much that not only can she feed her family, but also sell a proportion of the harvest in the local market.
